For the majority of people diagnosed with permanent hearing loss and tinnitus, a hearing aid is the primary recommended treatment option. Whilst hearing aids in the past have gained a somewhat negative stigma, today’s devices feature incredibly complex and advanced technology, in amazingly discreet designs, to provide wearers with a seamless, natural hearing experience.

Hearing aids are becoming cool and have much greater levels of acceptance than ever before and its only getting better, you can hide them with our invisible options or proudly show them off to your family and friends, and remark at how amazing it is that they can stream music, connect to your phone, TV or computer and even connect to Alexa and Google Assistant.

A hearing aid has 4 basic parts: a microphone, computer processing chip, amplifier, and speaker. The hearing aid receives sound through a microphone, which converts the sound waves to electrical signals and sends them to an amplifier. The amplifier increases the power of the signals and then sends them to the ear through a speaker. Not all hearing aids process sound in the same way, each manufacturer has a slightly different algorithm for prescribing gain and compression. This algorithm is fundamental to ensuring maximum speech intelligibility and sound audibility, a hearing aid is much more than just an amplifier.

Selecting the correct technology is a challenge. Most of the high street chains do not offer truly impartial and independent advice as they are usually owned or linked with one particular manufacturer, so often the ‘best’ hearing aid for you is the one they offer, while potentially excluding you from knowing all of your options.

We were the first private practice in the country to offer paid but non obligated test and trials in the country. This has been a staple of our business model since inception, many copied the format but what they lack is our expertise, which is widely recognised as industry leading. If you are open and honest with what you do and don’t want with us; we will reciprocate with solid and effective recommendations, because we charge for our time we do not sell to you. As an independent clinic, we are not tied to one hearing aid manufacturer, meaning we have widest range, of the finest digital hearing technologies available, and we will always provide objective advice, so you know you are getting the product which is best suited to your individual needs.

We can offer all hearing aids by Widex, Sivantos/Signia, Resound, Starkey, Oticon and Phonak. Our pricing depends upon what technology level and aftercare package you select, but we are comparable to most high street providers. We were the first company to even offer free wax removal for our hearing aid patients*, a provision which ensures our patients are maximising their hearing experience long term without compromise.

TYPES OF HEARING AIDS

Hearing aids come in a variety of styles, designed to suit different levels of hearing loss and lifestyle. It is important that you get the hearing aid best suited to your needs. When you purchase hearing aids from us, we will hand-pick a device from the very best available. Your hearing aid will be selected based on a variety of factors including:

Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

Consist of a hard, plastic case worn behind the ear and connected to a plastic earmold that fits inside the outer ear. The electronic parts are held in the case behind the ear. Sound travels from the hearing aid through the earmold and into the ear. BTE aids are used by people of all ages for mild to profound hearing loss.

Receiver-in-Canal (RIC)

These hearing aids are also known as receiver-in-the-ear (RITE) aids. They consist of a plastic case worn behind the ear that holds the microphone, amplifier and processor. They differ from traditional behind-the-ear devices in that both the receiver and speaker are housed in a little dome that sits within the ear, and the two are connected by a fine wire that’s very discreet. RIC aids are particularly good at amplifying high pitched sounds (typically the sounds we struggle to hear when we start to lose our hearing). This makes them a good choice for people with mild to moderate loss.

In-the-Ear (ITE) / In-the-Canal (ITC)

This hearing aid fits completely inside the outer ear and is used for mild to severe hearing loss. The case holding the electronic components is made of hard plastic. ITE aids are not usually worn by young children as the casings need to be replaced often as the ear grows or changes shape over time.

Rechargeable Hearing Aids

Rechargeable hearing aids are a great alternative to battery operated aids. They are ideal for those with dexterity issues, or those who simply do not want the inconvenience of changing batteries frequently. These aids are charged overnight and provide a full day’s wear.
