Tinnitus can be described as the buzzing or ringing in the ears with no external source. Tinnitus is a fairly common condition which varies greatly in its severity, but for some people living with the condition, sadly, it can be life-destroying.
Tinnitus can be distressing and may impact on your quality of life, many patients are left distraught when seeking support as GPs and certain health professionals are unable to provide adequate support. Audiology provides the most pragmatic avenue for treatment and support.
Whilst there are currently no known cures for Tinnitus, it is a condition which can be managed to reduce its impact. CAUSES OF TINNITUS
Since Tinnitus in most cases is a symptom of a problem, the first thing you should do is to try to find out the underlying cause.
Audiology is usually the first stop in this process, a full hearing evaluation can identify hearing loss and other factors that may be associated with your Tinnitus. In addition to audiology it may necessary to seek investigations with other clinical departments ENT, Neurology and even physiotherapy to help find the route cause.
Some of these conditions are:
Impacted wax (external ear)
Ear infection
Middle ear tumors
Otosclerosis
Vascular problems (circulation disorders)
Ménière’s disease
Ototoxic medications (more than 200 medicines can cause Tinnitus)
Noise-induced hearing loss (inner ear)
At the central level—the eighth cranial (auditory) nerve
